Behind that name lies another specific story related to the interesting history of this type of gin, from which it gained the name 'Navy Strength'. Officers of the British Royal Navy in the 18th century devised a test for the strength of gin that was carried on voyages, in a somewhat unusual way. A mixture of gin and gunpowder was lit, and if it burned with a clear flame, it was proof that the strength of the gin was at least 57% by today's standards and of good quality.

In addition to ensuring compliance with required standards in this way, they were also certain that the gunpowder, which was usually stored next to the gin, would still be usable even if it came into contact with the gin.
